he official opening ceremony of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union took place on the 7th of January 2026 at the Cyprus Theatre Organisation (THOC).
The opening ceremony featured an introduction by the Deputy Minister for European Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus, Ms Marilena Raouna, followed by addresses delivered by the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Nikos Christodoulides, the President of the European Council, Mr António Costa, the President of the European Commission, Ms Ursula von der Leyen, and the President of Ukraine, Mr Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Among the attendees were Maia Sandu, President of Moldova; Abdul Latif Rashid, President of Iraq; Joseph Aoun, President of Lebanon; Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the Arab League; and Jasem Mohamed AlBudaiwi, Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council.
Hungary was represented at the event by Ambassador Dr. Lakos Krisztina.
